2. Ensure that your precious metals bear registered trademarks or are patent-protected, and can also be certified by the supplier.

That depends on your goal: small units (1–20 g) offer flexibility for resale, while larger bars (100 g, 1 kg) are cheaper relative to their weight. Many investors combine both. Both investment bars and investment coins made of gold are tax-exempt. However, certain criteria, such as the year of minting and gold purity, must be met for this to apply. A distinction should be made here between investment bars and coins, i.e., so-called bullion coins or collector and commemorative coins.

Gold bars
Gold in bar form is considered investment gold if it has a fineness of at least 995/1000. Gold bars generally meet this requirement and are therefore sold without VAT.

Gold coins
Gold coins are considered investment gold if they have a fineness of at least 900/1000 and are legal tender in their country of origin. In addition, they must have been minted after the year 1800. Only the purchase of scrap gold and gold coins that are not defined as investment gold under tax law is subject to VAT.

Silver investment bars are subject to a 19% value-added tax in Germany. This also applies to silver coins and coin bars. An exception is currently made for silver coins imported from non-EU countries. In this case, differential taxation applies. This is often associated with the term "special scheme." This version of the tax regulation is significantly cheaper for buyers.
